Cutting wood by hand. There are more modern sawmills around, but labor is certainly cheaper than the machinery and very few large trees are left to process. Commercial tree cutting was outlawed in 1989, but the law has been completely ignored, and in fact, the amount of trees cut annualy has grown each year. Thailand now has an estimated 18% forest cover compared to 71% just 20 years ago.

Penan Tribal Princess. This tribe from the Island of Borneo was famous for its headhunting. Just recently (1996), in the area where I lived, there was a 'scirmish' between people from some of the head-hunting tribes and Muslims living in the area. Quite a few Muslims lost their heads.

Sometimes these same things were withheld from people who wern't willing to attend christian services or practice the faith, which meant abandoning there own Hmong faith.
